Cadets on Patrol: Junior Rangers in Action at Tarrywile Park
On June 8th, Tarrywile Park welcomed a new kind of ranger: the Danbury Police Cadets kicked off our very first Junior Ranger Patrol, and it was an exciting and meaningful day of service in the park.
Day One Highlights: Lost & Found and Bee Surprises
The Cadets explored various areas of the park, greeting visitors and observing activity across the grounds. Their presence not only helped deter litter and mischief but also supported parkgoers directly:
- 🧭 Helping Hands: The Cadets assisted a couple who had lost the remote switch for their phone camera setup. Thanks to their sharp eyes and teamwork, the item was quickly found and returned.
- 🎒 Mystery Backpack: They discovered a small red backpack left off the trail, which a passerby mentioned had been sitting there for a few days. (Note: If you’re missing a bag, check with us.)
- 🛠️ Damaged Gazebo Railing: At the Gazebo near the apple trees, Cadets noticed several spindles in the railing were broken. This has been reported to maintenance for repair.
- 🐝 Bees in the Bonnet: It wasn’t just the broken wood that caught their attention — they also found a bee infestation in the Gazebo’s bonnet area!
Second Patrol: Expanding Their Reach
On June 21st, the Cadets returned for their second Junior Ranger Patrol, taking a more structured approach. They split into two teams:
- One group began near the trail by the pond,
- The other patrolled the main path between the parking lot and the pond.
This coverage allowed them to interact with more visitors, observe high-traffic areas, and continue fostering a culture of care and awareness throughout the park.
Why It Matters
The Junior Ranger Patrol program is more than just a community policing effort — it’s about building relationships, teaching stewardship, and giving young Cadets the opportunity to serve while learning about environmental responsibility.
Their presence has already had a positive impact, and we’re excited to continue these patrols throughout the season.
Have something to report from your own park visit? Lost an item or noticed damage? Let us know — or look for a Cadet during your next walk. They might just be the hero of your day!
Stay safe, and thank you to the Danbury Police Cadets for their service!
