Tarrywile Mansion has been an important part of the Danbury, CT community for more than a century. Originally built in 1897, the estate was owned by Dr. William C. Wile. Wile was a Civil War veteran, Danbury’s first medical examiner, and a major supporter of Danbury Hospital. The mansion was designed as an elegant country estate surrounded by rolling hills, gardens, ponds, and scenic woodland. Over time, the property expanded into a remarkable estate that reflected the beauty and character of the surrounding landscape. The neighboring Hearthstone Castle became part of the estate’s history when Parks purchased the stone castle in 1918 as a wedding gift for his daughter. Built from locally quarried stone and featuring imported Italian woodwork, Hearthstone Castle became one of the most recognizable landmarks connected to the property. The castle’s dramatic architecture and elevated setting added to the estate’s reputation as a memorable gathering place for celebrations and social events.
The property's future changed in 1985 when Danbury residents overwhelmingly voted to preserve the estate for future generations.
